Reuse… How to get children and young people outdoors?

September 3 Author: admin

Gift Your Gear - recycle your outdoor gear
The British Heart Foundation recently reported “that the physical fitness and health of children and young people are substantially enhanced by physical activity. In addition, there is evidence that it can reduce the symptoms of anxiety and depression.”

The Children’s Society have noted that “it has been established that outdoor play provides on of the best forms of exercise for children of all ages.”

Children and young people need to get outdoors for their physical, emotional and intellectual well-being. The ability to pay for outdoor clothing and equipment is often cited as a reason for non-participation.

It’s hard to enjoy the great outdoors when you’re cold, wet and uncomfortable. Having the right outdoor clothing and equipment helps to ensure that our outdoor experiences are safe and enjoyable.

In the dark recesses of the nations wardrobes, attics and garages, is a solution to getting UK youth outdoors. Long forgotten items of outdoor clothing and equipment are gathering dust. The great outdoors is where they belong.

Gift Your Gear is a nationwide initiative that provides outdoor clothing and equipment to local community organisations, youth groups and charities working with young people in the outdoors.

Sarah Howcroft, founder of Gift Your Gear, stresses the importance of reusing outdoor gear that still has plenty of life left in it, “Most gear will last much longer than we need it too. If an outdoor jacket is worn for a couple of years and then ends up forgotten in the back of a wardrobe, its full potential is never realised”.

If that jacket is donated through Gift Your Gear to a local community organisation, youth group or charity working with young people in the outdoors, not only is the useful life of the jacket extended, but another person gets to experience the joy of using good gear.

Her eventual aim is to see Gift Your Gear donate one million items of unwanted outdoor gear. That might seem like a big ask but Sarah loves a challenge.

Over 1 million tonnes of clothing is discarded annually in the UK. Of this only about 300,000 tonnes is reused or recycled with the remainder ending up in landfill. DEFRA recently reported that the best end of life solution for clothing is reuse.

Gift Your Gear makes a difference. The outdoor gear you donate will make a real difference to the community organisations, youth groups and charities who receive it. Enabling others to benefit from life changing experiences in the great outdoors regardless of their circumstances. You get to reclaim your storage space, and selflessly helping someone feels good.

This September Gift Your Gear has partnered with Rohan, the award-winning outdoor and travel clothing company.

Take your unwanted (but in good condition) outdoor clothing to any Rohan shop during the month of September, that’s all outdoor clothing, walking boots and includes children’s clothing regardless of brand and receive a 15% discount to spend on any new item in the shop on the day.
