Green Beauty on a Budget: Are Natural Bath Products Worth the Money?

Adore Naturals - handmade natural and organic skincare

There’s no getting around it – natural bath products are more expensive than their non-natural equivalents. Chemicals and synthetic fragrances are a lot cheaper than high quality essential oils – which is why they’re so commonly found in skincare, cosmetics and other beauty products.

We all have times when there’s too much month left at the end of the money though, and deciding how to prioritise can be hard. If you’re looking for green beauty on a budget and wondering if natural bath products are really worth the money, here are some things to think about:

Could you be heading for toxic overload?

If you pop a supermarket bottle of bubble bath into your shopping basket while doing the weekly shop, you can be certain its ingredients have been approved for sale in the EU. Surely that means there’s nothing to be worried about then – your bubble bath is completely safe?

Well, yes and no. The problem is that while individual chemicals and synthetic ingredients may have been approved by scientists, they’ve been given the OK based on what we know about them today. But nobody really knows what the long-term effects of continued use could be.

Think for a second about the number of beauty, skincare and hair care products you use in a day. Then imagine using these day in, day out, over the course of your life. That’s potentially a lot of chemical nasties and toxins, combining inside your body in new and horrible ways!

It’s not just the long-term impact of synthetic fragrances and chemicals you need to think about either. Lots of common ingredients in bath products can be really bad for your skin. One such chemical is Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), a detergent originally invented to strip oil from garage floors. Because SLS is good at making bubbles, it is added to nearly all bath and shower products you find on the supermarket shelves. But SLS is known to cause severe irritation to dry and sensitive skin, and should be avoided by anyone with eczema or psoriasis.

Whether you already have a skin sensitivity or not, limiting unnecessary exposure to chemicals make sense. They say you can’t put a price on peace of mind – wouldn’t you agree?

Give your baby the best start

Becoming a parent is often the first time we start to think about the chemicals we’re exposed to in day-to-day life. The second that tiny, fragile bundle of joy enters our world, the protection instinct kicks in! Nobody wants to expose their child to chemical nasties or allergens – and so the label-reading begins.

Baby bath

We’ve all heard horror vigrx plus fraud stories about baby products containing cancer-causing ingredients in the US (particularly the report that Johnson & Johnson’s baby shampoo, sold in the US, contains traces of potentially harmful chemicals). Yes these ingredients have been deemed safe by scientists in their laboratories – but again, do you want to take the risk?

Not only do standard baby bath products often include synthetic ingredients like SLS, but many contain parabens too. Parabens are chemical preservatives that are thought to disrupt hormone function, something which has been linked with cancer. Synthetic fragrances included in baby bath products have been linked with urinary tract infections in children too – which doesn’t bear thinking about!

Natural bath products designed for babies are mild, gentle and don’t include harsh chemicals that strip away natural oils. They have a very gentle (rather than overpowering) fragrance, and are kinder to the environment too. Do you really want to risk exposing your baby to chemicals at such an early age, when there are so many natural alternatives around?

Be happier at home!

Natural bath products are not only kinder to your skin, they can make you easier to live with too. Why? Because natural bath products use essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances, and can have a positive effect on your mood. If you’ve ever had to justify buying natural bath products instead of cheaper alternatives….here’s one to bear in mind! You can’t put a price on happiness, or domestic harmony.

If work is stressful and you’re finding it hard to get a good nights’ sleep – try a bath melt infused with relaxing lavender oil. Feeling worn out after a day with the kids (don’t we all have days like that?!) – look for a bath oil blended with rosemary and grapefruit oils. Need a pick-me-up to get going in the morning after a bad night’s sleep? Peppermint, lemongrass and bergamot will give you a kick-start.

So you see – natural bath products aren’t just better for your skin, they’re better for your overall wellbeing. Bath products made using cheap, synthetic fragrances just don’t have the same effect on your mind. In fact – a growing number of people are allergic to synthetic fragrances, which means they’re doubly bad!
