It was only a few years ago, that to many people the thought of owning an electric car was as improbable as eating a full course meal in the shape of a tablet. It was an idea more at home in the storylines of futuristic TV shows than everyday life, however, this is no longer the case.
With new government incentives and more people seeking greener, less expensive fuel alternatives, the electric car market is gaining momentum.
One of the cars at the forefont of this new breed of electric vehicles is the brand new Chevrolet Volt. Unlike some electric vehicles which rely on battery power alone, the Volt offers the best of both worlds – freedom of driving electric and the reassurance of not being left stranded. How? We’ll let Chevrolet explain.
Unlike normal electric cars the Volt actually creates its own electricity! In doing so it extends its range to over 300 miles.
The Volt operates purely as a battery electric vehicle, when you come to the end of its battery range at between 25 and 50 miles its petrol engine kicks in to power an electric generator to recharge the battery to extend the vehicle’s range.
Another trick the Volt has to help top up the on board electricity regeneration system is the regenerative braking.
The Volt was named 2011 North American car of the year, making it the first electric car to win such a prestigious award. Along with this the Volt has won:
*AUTOMOBILE Magazine 2011 Automobile of the Year
*Green Car Journal 2011 Green Car of the Year
*Motor Trend 2011 Car of the Year
The car is an eco-warriors dream, ushering in a new era of auto number-crunching for those who want it (those who don’t can just switch the screen display over to radio functions). A “This Drive” function marks you on the journey you have just done, scoring you on driving style – based on power consumption, so black marks for aggressive braking or acceleration – and also on climate setting. Having seen all this, you almost feel guilty starting the engine at all.
Get behind the wheel and the dashboard screen lights up to reveal a floating green ball which you need to keep in the centre of its range for optimal efficiency.
The Chevrolet Volt is an amazing piece of technology, leading the way for the future of eco friendly automobile technology.
